Global Dialogues Bring Students Together to Discuss the SDGs

Event dates: 25 September, 2 October and 24 OctoberSeries: 25 September 2026 to 20 November

Three online Global Dialogues on 25 September, 2 October and 24 October brought together approximately 900 students from a wide range of countries and regions, including Mainland China, Hong Kong, Argentina, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Northern Cyprus, the Philippines, Turkey and the United States.

Featured speakers of the first three meetings included Dr. Saikat Banerjee, Assistant Professor of English at Jamalpur College, Munger University, Bihar, India; Ms. Dawn Harris Wooten, instructor of Civic Education Project, Northwestern University, U.S.A.; and Dr. Elia M. Cornelio Marí, Assistant Professor at Universidad Juárez Autónoma de Tabasco, Mexico. Students explored pressing SDG-related issues with experts and exchanged perspectives with peers from diverse backgrounds.

Dr. Nora Anniesha Binte Hussin, Director of HKBU’s Language Centre, delivered a welcome address at the Global Dialogue on Media and Technology. She encouraged students to consider media addiction and polarization, and to use technology wisely to foster empathy, celebrate diversity, and connect across cultures.

Facilitated by course coordinator Dr. Emma Zhang and co-organisers worldwide, the dialogues form part of the Language Centre’s Enhancing English through Global Citizenship (EEGC) course. Through SDG-focused discussion, students develop English-language skills, critical thinking and intercultural competence. This approach supports HKBU’s mission of academic excellence in teaching and whole-person development.

The 2026–27 Global Dialogue series runs from 25 September 2026 to 20 November, with six sessions exploring topics including Fast Fashion, Household Waste, Media and Technology, Global Labour and Employment, Gender Equality and Intercultural Communication.
